One upon a time there lived an unhappy young girl. Her mother was dead and her father had married a widow with two daughters. Her stepmother didn't like her one little bit. All her kind thoughts and loving touches were for her own daughters. Nothing was too good for them - dresses, shoes, delicious food, soft beds, and every home comfort. But, for the poor unhappy girl, there was nothing at all. No dresses, only her stepsisters’ hand-me-downs. No lovely dishes, nothing but scraps. No rest and no comfort. She had to work hard all day. Only when evening came was she allowed to sit for a while by the fire, near the cinders. That’s why everybody called her Cinderella. Cinderella used to spend long hours all alone talking to the cat. The cat said, . Miaow. , which really meant, . Cheer up! You have something neither of your stepsisters has and that is beauty.. It was quite true. Cinderella, even dressed in old rags, was a lovely girl. While her stepsisters, no matter how splendid and elegant their clothes, were still clumsy, lumpy and ugly and always would be.

One day, beautiful new dresses arrived at the house. A ball was to be held at the palace and the stepsisters were getting ready to go. Cinderella didn't even dare ask if she could go too. She knew very well what the answer would be: . You? You're staying at home to wash the dishes, scrub the floors and turn down the beds for your stepsisters. They will come home tired and very sleepy.. Cinderella sighed, . Oh dear, I'm so unhappy!. and the cat murmured . Miaow.. Suddenly something amazing happened. As Cinderella was sitting all alone, there was a burst of light and a fairy appeared. . Don't be alarmed, Cinderella,. said the fairy.

I know you would love to go to the ball. And so you shall!. . How can I, dressed in rags?. Cinderella replied. . The servants will turn me away!. The fairy smiled. With a flick of her magic wand Cinderella found herself wearing the most beautiful dress she had ever seen. . Now for your coach,. said the fairy; "A real lady would never go to a ball on foot! Quick! Get me a pumpkin!. . Oh of course,. said Cinderella, rushing away. Then the fairy turned to the cat. . You, bring me seven mice, and, remember they must be alive!.

Cinderella soon returned with the pumpkin and the cat with seven mice he had caught in the cellar. With a flick of the magic wand the pumpkin turned into a sparkling coach and the mice became six white horses, while the seventh mouse turned into a coachman in a smart uniform and carrying a whip. Cinderella could hardly believe her eyes. Cinderella had a wonderful time at the ball until she heard the first stroke of midnight! She remembered what the fairy had said, and without a word of goodbye she slipped from the Prince. s arms and ran down the steps. As she ran she lost one of her slippers, but not for a moment did she dream of stopping to pick it up! If the last stroke of midnight were to sound... oh... what a disaster that would be! Out she fled and vanished into the night.

The Prince, who was now madly in love with her, picked up the slipper and said to his ministers, “Go and search everywhere for the girl whose foot this slipper fits. I will never be content until I find her!” So the ministers tried the slipper on the foot of every girl in the land until only Cinderella was left. That awful untidy girl simply cannot have been at the ball,. snapped the stepmother. . Tell the Prince he ought to marry one of my two daughters! Can't you see how ugly Cinderella is?. But, to everyone. s amazement, the shoe fitted perfectly. Suddenly the fairy appeared and waved her magic wand. In a flash, Cinderella appeared in a splendid dress, shining with youth and beauty. Her stepmother and stepsisters gaped at her in amazement, and the ministers said, "Come with us Cinderella! The Prince is waiting for you." So Cinderella married the Prince and lived happily ever. As for the cat, he just said "Miaow!"

The Legend of keong Emas

,

Prince Raden Putra was married to a princess named Dewi Limaran. One day when Dewi Limaran was walking in the palace garden, she saw a snail among her lovely flowers and she had one of her servants pick it up and throw it away. The Snail was actually an old witch who had disguised herself as a snail. The witch was very angry, so she cursed Dewi Limaran and changed her into a golden snail and threw it into the river. The stream carried it far away from the palace. On the side of a big forest, there lived a poor widow. Her living was only fishing. One day it was a particularly bad day as she didn’t catch any fish. Again and again she spread her net, but nothing got caught into it. At last she pulled up the net to go home. Suddenly she saw something shining at the bottom of it. It was only a snail. Nevertheless she picked it up and took it home. Its shell shone like gold the old woman had never seen such a snail before. At home she put it in an earthen pot. She then went to bed and soon was fast asleep as she was very tired. The next morning when she woke up, she found to her amazement that the floor had been swept clean and there was some food on the table. She wondered who had done all this. She thought she was dreaming, but she was not. She thought and thought but could not think of anybody who could have been so generous to her. Some days passed….…..she then got an idea. The next morning she took her basket and went out as usual, but shortly she returned to her hut and hid herself. Suddenly she heard a soft movement inside the earthen pot and saw the snail creeping out of it. It grew bigger and bigger and in a moment a lovely young girl stood where the snail had been. The empty shell fell to the ground behind her. Quickly the young girl swept the floor. Then she took rice, vegetables, meat, eggs etc. out of the pot and began cooking.

When the old woman saw all this, she noticed that it was not an ordinary snail she had caught, but a person who lived under a spell, and she knew what she had to do to break it. She crept stealthily to the empty shell, took it, and then rushed out of the hut to throw it into the river. Now she had broken only a part of the spell, and the rest of it must still be broken before she could return to her husband. The young girl then made herself known to the old woman. “I shall pray to the gods that the prince might be led to his place,” said the old woman. Many years passed by……. The king persuaded his son to look for another bride, but at first Prince Raden Putra refused as he could not forsake his wife. In the end, however, the prince asked his father if he could go out to find a bride, but one who was a look-alike of his former wife. An old faithful servant accompanied him on his trip. They went from town to town and from village to village until one day were travelling through a big forest and they lost their way. Finally the men came to a big river and not far from it they saw a hut. They went to it to ask for some food and drink as they were hungry, thirsty and dead tired. The old woman welcomed them warmly. Raden Putra found the meal served by the old woman excellent. She told him that her daughter had prepared it. Raden Putra then asked whether he might meet and thank her daughter. The old woman had no objections and called her daughter to come out. The young girl appeared and knelt down in front of Raden Putra with her head bent. When Raden Putra saw her, he caught his breath in great surprise as the young girl looked exactly like his former wife princess Dewi Limaran. “You are the bride I’m looking for!” he cried out. But the girl shook her head and said that she had made a promise : when a man wanted to marry her, he had to obtain the holy gamelan ( Javanese orchestra) from heaven which could make music without being touched. Raden Putra was willing to try and went out into the forest. He then fasted and meditated. After a hundred days the gods heard and granted his wish. On their wedding day the holy gamelan played its heavenly music. It was so beautiful that every person who heard it felt happier than ever. The young girl than revealed her secret, that she was Dewi Limaran herself. The music of the gamelan had broken the evil witch’s spell. The old woman had been invited to remain in the place. Now she had everything she wanted and sorrow had left her forever. (Source: http://www.planetmole.org/daily/the-legend-of-keong-mas.html)

The boy was called Jayaprana. When the boy had got adult he became a handsome and powerful soldier. Although he was a beloved soldier to the king, Jayaprana was a simple person, he dedicated his life to the kingdom especially to the king. Then, the time had come. Jayaprana fell in love with a beautiful flower seller in the market. The girl was Layonsari (actually this is not her real name. No one know her real name. The name of Layonsari was known after her death). Layonsari also fell in love with Jayaprana. The lovely couple intended to get married and this was a happy news to the whole kingdom. It was such a happy atmosphere surrounding the kingdom especially for the married couple. But what's a pity. When the king met with Layonsari, he suddenly fell in love with Layonsari when Layonsari had been Jayaprana's wife. He was really obsesive to Layonsari though he realised that Layonsari had been to be Jayaprana's wife. To have Layonsari to be his wife he had to kill Jayaprana. The king set up a plan tokill Jayaprana by ordered Jhim going to the forest near the sea to kill the intruders/robbers accompanied by his guards. With this strategy the king hoped he could gave Jayaprana away from his wife and he could persuaded Jayaprana's wife to be his wife. Jayaprana went to the forest although his wife had told him about her bad sign for his journey. He accompanied by Patih Sawung Galing, the head guard of the kingdom. After several days they reached the forest eventually. There were many faiths with the robbers, and they succeeded in killing all the robbers. At the last faith with the robbers, Patih Sawung Galing tried to kill Jayaprana. But he could not. He tried many times with various ways but nothing could kill him. Then Patih Sawung Galing stopped. Jayaprana and Patih Sawung Galing made a conversation. Jayaprana asked Patih Sawung Galing why he wanted to kill him. According to Patih Sawung Galing, that was the king's order. He told Jayaprana that the king had a desire for Layonsari and wanted her to be his wife. Jayaprana understood and became sad. He knew the king was very kind of him during his life. Jayaprana wanted to give anything to the king but his wife. He had promised to obey all the orders of the king. Of course, Jayaprana could killed Patih Sawung Galing and then killed the king. But what for? He thought, with the event, he had nothing anymore in his life except his wife. He was so sad. Then he decided to let Patih Sawung Galing to kill him in order to fulfil his promise to the king, his step-father. He took the flower he was using in his hair and gave it to Patih Sawung Galing. Jayaprana also gave his Keris (Balinese wavy dagger) to Patih Sawung Galing so he could kill him. Jayaprana asked Patih Sawung Galing to send his mesage to his wife that he was died in order to fulfil his promise to the king. The tears of Patih Sawung Galing dropped when he took the flower and Keris. With just one hit Patih Sawung Galing could kill Jayaprana easily. Then the magic began. A good smell came from the body of Jayaprana and spreaded out to cover the forest. All animals became sad and screamed out but a white tiger. The tiger jumped to Patih Sawung Galing and killed the Patih Sawung Galing with one hit. The rest of the guards, deeply sad, went back to Kali Anget and told the story. At Kali Anget palace, Layonsari, after knowing her husband had been died for the king, commited suicid. And the same thing happened, a good smell came from her body and spreaded out to cover the palace. (Jayaprana's wife had her name from this event. Layonsari derived from two words; Layon means the death body, and Sari means a good smell). The good smell was a sign that they had no sins. The king was so sad with the event. Then he withdrewn himself and stopped reigning the kingdom. People of Kali Anget then brought the body of Layonsari to the forest where Jayaprana killed few days ago (because they wanted to met them together again). At the place the people built two graves. One grave for Jayaprana and Layonsari, another grave was for Patih Sawung Galing. The last man was destined to be the guard of the grave forever. After a complete ceremony, Jayaprana and Layonsari were stated as holy spirit. Event untill now people believe that the magic is still going on. Down on the sea, you can see from the hill where the grave lies, there are colorful sea coral that somehow in a special moment the color will change eventually. For centuries there have been many people (any kind of religions) come to the grave to worship and built a temple surrounding the grave. It is peace and has a good view on the grave yard, Menjangan island, event some mounts in East Java can be seen from this grave. Indeed in front of the grave is a beautiful peninsula, the grave located some 1 km from the main road toward the top of the hill. The place is known as Teluk Terima the grave, some 15 kms from Menjangan Resort, some 45 kms from Pulaki Temple , the area is considered to be part of West Bali National Park . The story about Jayaprana and Layonsari has become a love story epic for Balinese people. This sad story has been translated to many Balinese traditional songs, many Balinese dances and scrips of Balinese play (sendratari). It is compared much more like Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet. Though most of the people believe this is a true story but Balinese historians can not find any clue due to its existance except the grave.

Dayang Sumbi took the heart, cooked it and ate it. When she discovered that the heart belonged to Tumang, her husband, she was overcome with wrath. She sent her son away, but not before she hit him with a spoon and left a deep scar on his head. Sangkuriang travelled around the world. After a long while, he arrived back in his village again without recognizing it. He saw a beautiful lady and fell in love with her. Little did he know that she was his own mother. He asked for her hand in marriage and she agreed. Dayang Sumbi later realized that Sangkuriang was her son, as she recognized the scar that she had inflicted. She tried to tell him and break off the wedding, but he didn’t believe her and insisted to go on with the wedding. Dayang Sumbi then set an impossible condition that Sangkuriang has to fulfill in order to marry her: he should build her a big boat and a lake by damming Citarum river, all within one night, and it shall be finished by dawn. Sangkuriang agreed to the condition. He built a boat from a large tree, and with the help of spirits, he dammed the Citarum river with landslides. The water eventually rose and filled the plain, turning it into a lake. When dawn was near, he was almost ready. Dayang Sumbi realized this, so she prayed for divine intervention. As an answer to her prayers, the eastern horizon lit up. Deceived by the lights, cocks crowed and farmers rose for the new day, thinking that dawn has broken
. Sangkuriang was also deceived. He thought his endeavor has failed. Angrily, he kicked the boat so that it toppled over. This boat became Tangkuban Parahu mountain (tangkuban means upside down, and parahu means boat). The pile of leftover woods became Mt. Burangrang, and the rest of the big tree became Mt. Bukit Tunggul. The lake became lake Bandung (which literally means ‘dam’). (Source: http://www.indonesiatogo.com/2009/07/04/the-legend-of-sangkuriang/)

Princess Story is Rainbow of Joy (Princess Jasmine Story)

,

One day, Jasmine was in a bad mood. She decided some brightly-colored jewelry might cheer her up but she couldn’t decide which color to wear. Just then a rainbow appeared. The colors made Jasmine feel happy. “I know! I’ll wear a rainbow jewelry,” she giggled. The only color jewelry Jasmine didn’t wear was her pearl bracelet. “It’s too plain,” she thought, putting in her pocket. Jasmine wanted to show Aladdin colorful look and headed to the market. She notices how happy everyone was. “Wow, your jewelry looks great,” said Aladdin. “It’s as cheerful as the rainbow!” Jasmine smiled as she remembered how the rainbow had changed her mood earlier. Unfortunately, the rainbow soon disappeared and the happy feeling in the market faded away, too. “If only we could find another could find another rainbow,” sighed Jasmine. “I know a place,” said Aladdin, helping Jasmine on to the Magic Carpet. The Magic Carpet flew them to a dazzling oasis, with a beautiful rainbow. “I feel so happy,” beamed Jasmine. “I wish we could take it home with us,” said Aladdin. “Maybe we can,” giggled Jasmine. Jasmine took out the pearl bracelet and placed it at the end of the rainbow. The magical colors soaked into the pearls. Back in the market, Jasmine held up the rainbow bracelet…but nothing happened! So Jasmine slipped the bracelet on to her wrist and began to dance. The bracelet began to glow with colors. As Jasmine danced in her rainbow jewelry, she cast colors all around her. Soon the whole market was dancing, too. “Now everyday can be a happy rainbow day,” laughed Jasmine. The End

Princess Power (Ariel Story)

,

One day King Triton had to go away for the night. “I am leaving you my trident for protection,” he told Ariel and sisters. “This will keep you safe, but make sure it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands!” “Let’s have a sleepover,” said Ariel. “We can take it in turns to stay awake and watch over the trident, and have some fun while Daddy’s away!” They did not realize that Ursula, the sea witch, was planning some fun of her own. Later that day, an old peddler arrived at the palace. “Like to buy some pretty things, my dear?” she crocked. A music box in the basket caught Ariel eye. “We could have some music at our sleepover,” said Ariel, paying the peddler. At the sleepover, Ariel and her sisters read stories and had makeovers. “I’ve found us some music!” said Ariel, opening the music box. “Now, who would like a sea fruit smoothie?” When Ariel returned with the drinks, her sisters were already fast asleep! “That’s odd,” said Ariel. Then she notices some strange music coming from her new music box. “The music must be making everyone go to sleep!” Ariel realized. Ariel rushed over to the music box and quickly closed the lid before she fell under its spell, too. “Phew!” said Ariel. Suddenly she noticed that her father’s trident was missing, “Oh, no” she cried. Ariel looked everywhere for the trident but she could not find it anywhere. Just then, Ariel spotted Ursula’s eels Flotsam and Jetsam, swimming out of a palace window. “The sea witch must have stolen the trident,” she said, “and it’s up to me to get it back!” Ariel covered her ears with some shell-muff and swam to Ursula’s lair with the music box. When Ariel arrived, she found Ursula boasting about what she had done. “Atlantica will be mine!” she shouted. “We’ll see about that,” said Ariel as she opened the music box. The strange music sent Ursula to sleep straight away, leaving Ariel free to get the trident back. Before the squids that guarding the trident fell asleep, they squirted out lots of link to try and stop Ariel from stealing the trident. Ariel managed to dodge the ink and it spattered over the sea witch instead. “It looks like Ursula’s had a sleepover makeover, too!” said Ariel, swimming away. When Ariel arrive back at the palace, dawn was breaking. King Triton would be home any moment so Ariel quickly used the trident to undo the sleeping spell and, one by one, her sisters woke up. Just then, King Triton arrived home. “It’s good to see you Daddy,” said Ariel, as she gave him a hug. “I am glad I left my trusty trident behind,” said King Triton, over breakfast. “How else would you Princesses have coped without me?” “Oh, Daddy,” said Ariel, with a grin. “Princesses can do anything…even protect a whole kingdom.” All sisters agreed but none of them realized that while they were asleep, that’s exactly what Ariel had done!
