Caiden POV
https://d.gr-assets.com/stories/1398698971p3/364810.jpgI wake up inhaling an intoxicating sweet scent. Notes of honey and mint swirl through my nostrils, causing my lips to turn up at the corners. Opening my eyes, I gaze at this heavenly creature that’s resting peacefully in my arms. How can Dylan reject her?

“Good morning.” I say as I see her eyes flutter open.
“Good morning.” She whispers, diverting her eyes away from mine.
“First off, let’s get something straight. Right, of course.”
“Did I see Dylan coming out of your room last night?” I ask, my stare penetrating her hazel eyes.

“To talk.” She shrugs and turns her back to me. Her long golden brown hair whips over her shoulder, causing her delightful scent to flood my sense. Closing my eyes I inhale deeply, relishing in that sweet scent that calms my nerves. I cock an eyebrow in question. A faint smile plays at the edges of her ruby lips. “I guess we have a love-hate relationship. Well, mostly hate.

Staring at the ground, realization hits me as the meaning behind her words sink in. A low rumble of laughter erupts from my throat. I quiet my laughter, a mischievous smile taking its place.

“Lucinda, the connection to our mate is like a double-edge sword.” I choose my words carefully. “Just as we’re hard-wired to love our mate, we’re also very possessive of them.” I watch her carefully. My own heart yearns as I speak about mates.

Lucinda POV
His body tensed at the mention of his mate. I let my eyes wander over him, searching for answers to my unasked questions. I see remorse and wistful longing in his eyes before he diverts his gaze away from mine. I walk out the door, giving one last look over my shoulder. I just witnessed the Alpha at his lowest. A broken man sitting on the edge of his bed, head bent low resting in his hands. My chest tightens with grief for an unknown reason.

I turn to see Dylan standing in front of his door, glaring at me. Entering the kitchen I find Mia and Gavin laughing, while Dylan sits brooding at the table. As I walk in the room quiets.

“Cinda! Perfect timing,” Mia says.

“Are your ears burning? Gavin interrupts flashing me a mischievous grin.

“Oh yeah?”

“Yup. A male voice says. I turn to see the same man with sandy blonde hair and emerald green eyes that first spoke to me yesterday when I entered the house.

“Hi. I’m Sam.” “Hi. I’m Cinda.” I say firmly shaking his hand. Dylan and I were out hunting when a pack of rogues sprang on us. I started to faded out, but then I saw Dylan pounce on the guy, knocking him off me and they rolled a few times landing a few feet from me.

I was useless, lying on the forest floor, my blood staining the leaves red. Then, out of know where a black wolf leaps through the air, standing aside Dylan. A menacing growl escaped the black wolf’s lips, and he was stripping his fangs. Mate, my wolf hollered.” Gavin embraced Mia and kissed her gently on the head before continuing.

I’m distracted by the most wonderful scent I’ve come to love, bergamot. Turning around I see Caiden walk into the kitchen. My eyes flit away as he looks to me. I hear a low growl and I know it’s from Dylan, I roll my eyes.

“And? What happened with the Black wolf and the rogues?” “Gavin’s telling the story of how he met Mia and Cinda.” He quickly adds for Caiden’s benefit. Caiden smiles and nods.

“Well, let’s just say I was terrified by the mysterious black wolf as I watched it shred the rogue pack to pieces. “In one swift motion the black wolf lunged in and ripped out the throat of the rogue leader. After his lifeless body fell to the bleeding forest floor, the other rogues scattered into the trees.”

“And then I blacked out.” Sammy gasps and I chuckle remembering Gavin’s face that morning.

My eyes wander to Dylan. I was pretty shaken up after killing those wolves. Mia took care of Gavin that night, so Dylan and I were left to our own devices. There wasn’t much talking, except right before I fell asleep in the security of his embrace, he whispered, ‘I love you, Lux. My heart swelled with joy that night.

Pulling myself back to reality, I see a fire burning in Dylan’s eyes. Turning toward him, a shy smile tugs at my lips.

Dylan abruptly stands, causing his chair to fall over, and heads outside. We all shrug our shoulders and ignore him.

“Mia, if you’re going shopping you should head out soon.” Caiden says, “And be back before dark.”

“Ready?” Mia asks me. I nod, displaying the most enthusiastic smile I can muster. I smile as I walk past him.
