Soapy and The Cops story ( Part Two )

,

Soapy walked five blocks before he tried again to be arrested. he now saw an opportunity which was sure to succeed. A pleasant looking young women was standing in front of a shop window gazing with interest at  a display of shoes and dresses. Only a few yards away a large policeman had stopped to look at his watch.
It was Soapy's idea to pretend to make love to the young woman.her attractive appearance and the nearness of the cop' encouraged him to believe he would soon experience that pleasant feeling of an officer sizing his arm.Soapy straightened his tie, pushed his hat to as slight angle, and moved the woman. He gave a little cough and began to smile. Trough the corner of his eye he saw that the policeman was  watching him. The women moved away a few steps and continued looking at the shoes and dresses in the shop window.
Soapy followed and stepping to her side he raised his hat and said," Ah, there, my dear, Would you like to take a walk with me? The policeman was still watching. All the woman had to was motion to him, and Soapy would be taken promptly to the police station. The woman faced him and then took hold of his arm.
"Sure she said happily, " I'll go with.if you'll buy me a drink."
With the woman holding his arm, Soapy walked past the surprised policeman. At the next corner, however, he left his companion and ran.
When he stopped running he had reached a well lighted district and found himself among fashionably dressed people. Women in fur coats and men in fine overcoats moved gaily in the wintry air, Soapy started  to wonder again why it was no difficult to be arrested. He was saw another policeman stnding in fornt of a theater  , he had another edea: perhaps he could be arrested for disorderly conduct.
On the sidewalk Soapy began to yell' a lot of foolish word and walk around like a drunk. He danced he sang , he howled, and he did all sors of things to create a disturbance.
The Policeman twirled his club, turned his back to Soapy, and remarked to a person standing nearby, That's one of those college boys celebrating the football game they won today, Noisy but harmless. We have orders not to bother them.
Disappointed once more, Soapy stopped trying to get arrested. He buttoned his thin coat against  the cool air and moved on.
in a cigar store he noticed a well dressed man lighting a cigar. The man had set his umbrella down near the door. Soapy stepped inside, took the umbrella, and waked away, the man followed hastily.
My umbrella he shouted
Oh is it ? said Soapy rudely ? 'Well, why don;t you call a cop ? I took it. If it's your umbrella why don't you call a cop ? There's one over there.
The umbrella owner slowed his steps and Soapy did the same .The Policeman looked at the two curiously.
Well, now, of course, th man said with some uncertainty well you know how easy it. is to make mistake I if it's your umbrella, I hope You'll excuse me. I picked it up this morning in a restaurant. If you recognize it as yours, why I hope you'll

Of course it's mine said Soapy angrily. "The umbrella man left in haste. The policeman hurried to assit a tall girl in a fur coat who was trying to cross the street in front of a street car.
Soapy walked east through a street torn up for improvements. He threw the umbrella away angrily  and said some words that were not very nice about men who wear blue uniforms and carry clubs.because he wanted to be arrested, they seemed to regard him as a king who could do no wrong.
At length Soapy reached  one of the avenues where there was little activity and not much light. Then he started back toward.Madison Square Park for he felt like going home, even if home was nothing more than a park bench. But on an unusually quiet corner Soapy noticed a quaint little church. A soft light glowed through one of the stained glass windows, where the organist was practicing the music he was to play the following Sunday morning. From inside the sweet music drifted out to Soapy's ears. He learned against  an old iron fence and listened.
The moon was bright overhead most vehicles most vehicles and  people had already left the street; birds were making sleepy noises in the trees ad for a little while the peaceful scene seemed like a churchyard in he county , And the music that the organist played held Soapy motionless by the iron fence , for he had known ths old song in the days when his life contained such things a mothers and roes and friends and clean thoughts and shirts.  The combination of Soapy's  youthful memories and the influence of the little old church made a sudden and wonderful change in his soul.
He reviewed in his mind the low depths to which he had fallen the wasted days, unworthily desires, dead hopes, w reeked opportunities and lost ambitions that made up his existence.
Also he felt an urge to change his ways, He would pull himself out of the depths to which he had fallen, he would overcome the shameful habits that  had taken possession of him. There was still time; he was comparatively young; he again and never let them die, Tomorrow he would go into the busy downtown district and find work. A fish merchant had once offered him  a job as delivery man. He would look for him tomorrow and ask for a job, He would Soapy felt a hand on his arm. he looked quikly around into the broad face of a policeman.
What are you doing hewre ? asked the officer, Nothing," replied Soapy in all honesty , My guess is that you're planning to rob one of the houses in this neighborhood, or perhaps this church, Come along with me to the station The next morning Soapy stood before the judge in the police court. Three months on the Island said th judge and Soapy was taken away
